Carol (The price of salt)

Highsmith, P. [Claire Morgan (nom de plume)], (1952) Carol (The Price of Salt). Coward-McCann.

How and where did you access it?

It was actually part of the recruiter reading for one of my modules at university.

How did it make you feel?

Warm. Like the feeling of crisp, hot sun on the back of your neck. I couldn’t pinpoint exactly why, but I knew that the book was immensely special to me. Of all the instances of love in literature -heterosexual included- the love of Carol and Therese felt the most real to me, somehow the most attainable. I think it’s the intense feeling that, rather unexpectedly, they had nothing to prove, no awkward jostling of the one trying to woo or win the other, because they just were. Such determinedly uninhibited love, despite all its inhibitions, is aspirational on every level.

Did you share it?

I recommend this book to every single person I can.
