The Faomous Five series

Blyton, E. (1942) Five on a Treasure Island. Hodder & Stoughton.

How and where did you access it?

Charity shop edition.

How did it make you feel?

I really identified with George, who desperately wanted to be a boy because she understood that boys were allowed to have all the adventures, but was stuck in a society and world that would always undervalue her as a woman. This book inspired and infuriated me in equal measure.

Did you share it?

Yes - and it informed quite a lot of the games I played as a child.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about it?

As an adult I often play between masculine and feminine clothing styles. Other formative books in helping me explore clothing and queer identities included Sarah Waters' 'Tipping the Velvet', Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night', and Woolf's 'Orlando'.
