The Philosophy Collection is a leading national resource and acts as the Library for the Royal Institute of Philosophy. Collection covers ancient philosophy, 21st century (works of philosophers in English and European languages), critical texts, thematic (metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, ethics, logic, etc). It is particularly strong in modern Western philosophy (British, American and Continental).


Most books and periodicals are located on the 6th floor.

Print periodicals

  • Recent issues of periodicals are on display in the Periodicals Room (North Reading Room), 4th floor.
  • Most back issues of periodicals and some monographs are shelved in the stacks. These will display the location Stack Service. Please request these through the Catalogue using the Fetch Service.

Finding articles

You can search multiple journals at once using electronic resources such as JSTOR, Academic Search Complete, or Philpapers.


The Philosophy Collection is complimented by a range of Databases.  Researchers should begin with the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy or the Electronic Enlightenment, and the two key bibliographic resources for philosophical research; Philpapers or the Philosophers Index.
