English Studies

The Collection supports research into the whole breadth of English Studies. Holdings on literature are comprehensive, with particular strengths in Old and Middle English, early modern writing, and the period 1850-1950.

The Collection also has significant coverage of Commonwealth literatures in English, comparative literature, critical theory and the history of the English language. The English Studies Collection is enhanced by important Special Collections holdings, which include rich periodical holdings dating back to the 17th century.

The English collection is located on the 5th floor.

Print periodicals

  • Recent issues of periodicals are on display in the Periodicals Room (North Reading Room), 4th floor.
  • Most back issues of periodicals and some monographs are shelved in the stacks. These will display the location Stack Service. Please request these through the Catalogue using the Fetch Service.

Finding articles

You can search multiple journals at once using electronic resources such as MLA International Bibliography and Periodicals Directory.

The Collection is complemented by an excellent range of Databases (Early English Books Online EEBO, etc), which provide significant and rich digitised research material. View the English Studies database list.
